Children who have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) may be eligible to receive Extended School Year (ESY) services during the summer. Due to budget shortfalls, districts are dramatically reducing these services. Many children who should qualify for this extra help are not receiving it. Schools will typically tell parents that ESY services are based on whether a child is at risk for regression during the summer. What they’re not telling you is that there are several other ways a child can qualify for ESY.
